The city of Huesca lies at the edge of the gently sloping plains, which lead to the River Ebro, and near the foothills of the dramatic and brooding Pyrenean mountains. The area where these meet is called "la Hoya" (meaning "the river basin"), and it is here that the essence of Aragón can be found: the inviting plains and the proud and noble mountains.
Huesca, capital city of the Alto Aragon region, is a small city with all the services and facilities necessary for a pleasant stay. It maintains its peace and proximity, its thousand-year history, and invites you to live its traditions, whilst incorporating the avant-garde and showing its vitality.
Its open and friendly people make the city a hospitable place with a great quality of life.
A visit to Huesca should include a visit to the cathedral, one of the first temples of the gothic architectonic school. The cathedral was constructed between the XIII and the XIV centuries in the same place that had been occupied by a roman temple and a muslim mosque.
There are still nearly two kilometres of the original city walls still in tact. One of the nine gates that provided entry to the city is also in place after over 1200 years since it was originally raised. Along its length there are many reminders of the ancient past of the city.
The peace that is evident in the streets of modern day Huesca has little in common with its turbulent history. Huesca was the capital of the city since the time when Sertorio defied the might of the legions of Rome and the city was also a key piece in Muslim domination of this part of the Pyrenees until Sancho Ramírez conquered the town.
The city was also the place that inaugurated the first university to exist on Aragonese soil and maintains this aspect of quiet reflection that is typified by its proud cathedral and interesting museums covering every period of Huescan history.
